Why I Built Little Koala: A Doctor's Perspective on Children's Wellness

What You'll Learn in This Article

  • The story behind Little Koala: how a naturopathic doctor and dad set out to better support kids’ everyday wellness.
  • How the brand grows thoughtfully, one carefully designed product at a time—guided by real families’ needs, clinical experience, and a promise of transparency.

Every supplement on the market makes claims. So let me skip that part and tell you something different: let me tell you why I built Little Koala, and what I was willing to settle for — and what I wasn't.

After nearly 18 years as a naturopathic doctor and as a dad to two kids of my own, I've learned something that I think every parent deserves to know: the quality of what goes into a child's daily supplement can play an important role in supporting their everyday wellness.

A Passion Born in the Exam Room

I didn't set out to launch a supplement company. I set out to support as many children's wellness needs as possible.

Year after year in my practice, parents would come to me feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. They felt their children's everyday nutrition and wellness could be better supported. They'd tried various options, done the research, and still felt like something was missing.

I saw again and again that when we focused on building a strong nutritional foundation — and on supporting children's everyday needs — families often reported positive changes. Kids seemed more energetic and more like themselves.

Hearing about those experiences never got old. But as much as I valued what was happening one-on-one in my practice, I kept running into a wall: I could only reach so many children in an office visit. I wanted to do more.

The Problem I Kept Seeing

The supplement aisle is full of products for kids. But the more closely I looked — reading labels the way I was trained to do as a naturopathic physician — the more I saw recurring patterns.

Some products use ingredient forms that may not be as easily absorbed for some people. Others contain added sugars, artificial dyes, and fillers that many parents prefer to avoid. Some contain relatively low amounts of ingredients compared to what many parents or practitioners look for. And almost none of them pass what I'd call the real-world test: would a genuinely picky child actually eat this every day?

That last part is more important than it might sound. A supplement that sits untouched in the cabinet isn't supporting anyone.

As a dad, I faced this exact challenge with my own son. He has significant food allergies and is a seriously picky eater. Finding products that contained the kinds of ingredients our family was looking for, were free of sugar and artificial additives, and actually tasted good enough for him to take willingly — that was its own part-time job.

Little Koala is not designed to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent food allergies. For any child with allergies, it's essential to work closely with their pediatrician or allergist when considering supplements.

Two Questions That Drive Everything

That search is what led me to create Little Koala. Not to add another product to the pile, but to offer options that reflected what I kept looking for personally and professionally.

Every formulation we develop starts with two questions I ask myself as both a doctor and a parent:

"Would I give this to my own children?" And: "Is this the absolute best it can be, based on what we know right now?"

If the answer to either question is no, we go back to the drawing board. Every ingredient has to earn its place. Every tablet has to pass a taste test with my own kids (the toughest critics I know). And every formulation reflects the same careful, evidence‑informed approach I use in my practice.

We pay close attention to ingredient quality, taste, and simplicity. That sounds straightforward, but in the supplement industry, it can be challenging — and not every brand makes the same choices we do.

Starting Small, Growing Intentionally

I made a deliberate decision to start with one product and grow the line gradually over time, guided by what families actually tell us they need and by my years of clinical experience. That's often different from how many supplement companies work, and it's intentional.

I've seen supplement lines expand quickly by chasing trends rather than by asking what children are truly missing in their daily routines. Little Koala is being built differently: each new product is designed to address a specific, identified area of children's wellness, guided by clinical experience and careful research, not marketing calendars.

Because Children's Wellness Shapes a Healthier World

There's a reason I kept coming back to this work even when it was hard. I genuinely believe that when we help support one child's everyday wellness, we're investing in something much bigger than that child alone.

Children who feel their best are often more engaged and able to participate more fully in their lives, families, and communities. That's something I've observed in my practice for nearly two decades.

It's also why Little Koala is built with philanthropy as part of its culture. Giving back to important health and community organizations isn't an afterthought — it's woven into who we are.

A Note to the Parent Reading This

If you're here, you're probably a lot like the parents I see in my practice: thoughtful, research-driven, sometimes a bit overwhelmed by the options, and deeply invested in your child's wellbeing. I see you, and I built this with families like yours in mind.

You deserve a supplement brand that is transparent with you — about ingredients, about quality, and about how we think about the science. That's what Little Koala is committed to being.

As always, I encourage you to talk with your child's pediatrician or healthcare provider about any supplement decisions. Every child is unique, and the best choices are always made in partnership with someone who knows your child's individual health picture.
